Shock fall to San Jose

03/30/2012 9:02 PM -

March 30, 2012 – Spokane, WA: The Spokane Shock lost tonight to the San Jose SaberCats, 35-69.

In a game that looked like it would be a high-scoring affair, Spokane and San Jose’s defense stepped up and stole the first quarter spotlight. San Jose stopped Spokane’s offense on its first two drives and the Shock returned the favor stopping the SaberCats offense on its first two possessions.

QB Mark Grieb ended the shut-out when he completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to James Roe to cap off a four-play series. On the ensuing drive, San Jose continued to set the tone for the game by intercepting Spokane’s QB Adam Froman for the second time and jumped out to an early 13-0 lead.

The Shock cut into that lead after DB/KR Terrance Sanders returned the ensuing kick-off 55-yards for Spokane’s first score of the game as the first quarter came to a close.

The SaberCats offense picked up the pace in the second quarter and scored on four of their five drives in the period. The Froman-led Shock offense continued to play catch-up in the second and produced three touchdowns but still trailed at the half 39-28.

Grieb and the SaberCats pulled away from Spokane pilling onto their lead in the third quarter by scoring 21-straight unanswered points.

“Offensively, we struggled,” Head Coach Andy Olson explained after the game. “We couldn’t overcome the mistakes we made and we just keep digging ourselves into a deeper hole.”

Froman finished the night completing 69% of his passes for 180 yards with two interceptions one passing touchdown and added two rushing touchdowns. WR Justin Ore led Spokane’s offense with eight receptions for 62 yards while Adron Tennell led the team with one touchdown reception.

Grieb finished the night earning the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Game after he completed 68% of his attempts for 315 yards with seven touchdowns. Grieb formed a lethal combination with his leading receiver veteran Ben Nelson who led the team in receptions (12) and yardage (165) and tied Roe for the lead in touchdown receptions (three).

San Jose now leads the all-time series against Spokane two games to one. Next week, Spokane will look to get back in the win column against the Rattlers in Arizona on April 6th.

“We will watch film, we will learn from our mistakes and we will grow,” Olson said. “We will figure out what’s going on, and we’ll make some adjustments to correct our mistakes.”
