Introducing the 2009 Shock Dance Team

01/08/2009 2:31 PM -

With the temperatures hovering above freezing, the streets of Spokane have become flooded with the melting snow of a long hard winter. These conditions didn’t stop Shock fans from pouring in to The Knitting Factory in the heart of downtown for the 2009 Spokane Shock Dance Team Finals.

In front a standing room only crowd, 29 finalists performed a group routine (in groups of 3 and 4) and an individual routine. The group routine was set to the beat of Usher’s “What’s Your Name,” was taught by 2nd-year Dance Team Director Maggie Cahalan during the preliminary round. The individual routine, on the other hand, was set to the beat and choreography of each finalist’s own choosing.

“The individual routines really give the judges a chance to see the dancers’ style and creativity,” Cahalan explained. “We heard everything from Britney Spears to Rob Zombie last night.”

Ten returning members of the last year’s team, which was named best in the af2, made it to the finals but the experience was still just as “nerve- racking”, according to third-year Dancer Casandra.

“The competition made me really nervous,” Casandra explained. “There was a lot of really good talent.”

The nervous energy of the dancers was rivaled only by the exuberance of the raucous crowd that came prepared with homemade signs and t-shirts to show support for their favorite dancers.

“The crowd was awesome; they were so intense this year!” Casandra continued. “It was great – I looked down and I could see people dancing in the crowd, which helped. I used the crowd to get into my dance and it worked really well.”

Casandra will be joined by 16 others on this year’s Dance Team and they are as follows: Stephanie (rookie),Karly (rookie), Mackenzie (rookie,) Rachel (3rd year) Casandra (3rd year), Chandra (rookie), Dani (2nd year), Amanda (rookie), Krista (2nd year), Chantel (2nd year), Jenny (2nd year), Jackie (rookie), Kaila (2nd year), Kim (3rd year), Lindsay (rookie) Jessika (2nd year) and Bri (3rd year).

“We had some really tough decisions last night. It was obvious that the girls worked hard on their routines during the holidays,” Cahalan said. “I feel good about the team that we have assembled for the upcoming season and I like our chances to repeat as the best in the af2. But we have a lot of work to do. It’s time to get to work!”

The Spokane Shock will open the season on April 3rd as they host the Stockton Lightning at the Spokane Arena on Spokane Tribe Field. Season tickets are available now (including seats on the lower level) and can be purchased by calling 242-7462.
